Errors and Omissions for Architects and Engineers
Overview

The Design Professional group of the XL Insurance companies offers innovative professional liability insurance programs for architects and engineers. Our specialized programs protect against and minimize professional liability risks through insurance, proactive loss prevention techniques and expert claims service.

The Design Professional group's insurance programs are marketed and delivered by a dedicated group of specialists that belong to the Professional Liability Agents Network (PLAN). These independent agencies have exclusive arrangements to deliver our products and services within their territories. Our continuous agent training and the support services provided by XL Insurance lead to an uncommon bond between agent and insurer — and an unequaled commitment to serving our clients.

Excess coverage is open to all brokers.

Coverage

For Practice Policies:

  • Up to $10 million standard policy limit
With XL Insurance's Design Professional group, you can select the amount of coverage that best meets your needs. Based on your firm's application, we offer limits of $100,000 to $10 million and deductibles of $0 to $10,000.
  • Worldwide coverage
Our policies apply to claims made against policyholders anywhere in the world.
  • Broad coverage definitions
Our innovative coverage evolves along with the risks faced by engineers. Broad coverage definitions provide flexibility as your practice changes. For example, the definition of "insured" includes predecessor firms and newly acquired firms, and the definition of "professional services" includes the use of BIM or other computer-assisted design technology (refer to policy for specific provisions).
  • Broad definition of "claim"
We do not wait for a formal lawsuit to acknowledge a claim against your policy and act on your behalf.
  • Contractor's pollution legal liability
We offer coverage for pollution conditions claims arising out of the performance of contracting services rendered by or on behalf of our insureds.
  • Network security liability
Design Professional offers protection against claims that arise out of the transmission of malicious code (virus) from the insured's computer network to third-party computers, as well as the corruption, deletion and/or unauthorized use of data on the insured's network.
  • Split limits option
Stretch your coverage with a small premium increase. Per claim "caps" and a larger policy limit guard against a single claim wiping out your protection.
  • Cost of defense options
Protect your deductible from the erosion of high legal fees through our Dollar One Defense, Shared Cost of Defense and Aggregate Deductible options.1
  • Early Warning Program
From the moment you report a problem, you'll receive expert claim service, in most cases at no charge to your deductible until a formal claim is made.
  • Mediation Works!
Resolve a dispute through mediation and receive up to 75% of your deductible back during the first year (50% thereafter), up to $25,000.
  • Credits for practice improvement
We offer a wide range of insurance credits to clients who take steps to improve their business practices.
    • Insurance education credits: Receive an annual premium credit of up to 10%1 by completing our industry-recognized education programs. Many programs are also approved by the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES).2
    • Limitation of Liability credits: Qualify for up to a 15% premium credit by using Limitation of Liability clauses in your contracts.1
    • Contractual risk management credits: Well written contracts are the best first defense against claims. If you incorporate at least three of our recommended practices, you'll qualify for a 75% deductible credit (up to $35,000) for claims resolved within one year, or a 50% deductible credit (up to $35,000) for claims resolved after one year.1

(1) Check with your agent or broker for details of program in Canada.
(2) Programs are registered with the national AIA, and units earned by architects are directly reported to the AIA by XL Insurance's Design Professional group. Not all states and licensing boards accept these programs for learning units, and some do not recognize the HSW qualification.
